Description
OK to all of you with week tummies hold on to your breakfast................. In the last weekend of September an emaciated 7 year old TB mare and her sickly and starved 3 month old colt entered the rescue program. They had been owned by a local vet. Yes, a vet. He bought the mare at a local horse sale in May already bred and saw a chance to make some money off the baby. The colt arrived on Memorial Day. He did nothing to give them proper care. He was told over 2 months ago that she had abscesses on both front feet by the blacksmith. He never lanced or cared for them. The infection ate away at her inner foot . They are filled with infection puss and blood. She can not really walk under her own power and spends so much time down that she has bed sores. Her body condition is a 1.1 on the Henneke chart and the baby is about a 1.5. Both of them have rain rot and baby has pneumonia. Local law enforcement could not do anything as there was a tub of water and a moldy round bale in her paddock. NY law is really cruddy. The only way to get the horses was to buy them. A private party from CA put up the money a neighbor purchased them form the vet so he would not know a rescue was involved and they entered the rescue. It has been about 2 weeks now and both are doing well. They have gained a good amount of weight and the baby is running and playing now. Mom is able to walk slowly on her own now. Her feet are wrapped and she is wearing a pair of OLD MAC boots. They have a long road ahead of them that will take tons of money and time. The mare we have named Delta Dawn and the baby is Willie. We wondered will he or won't he make it. Hence his name. She is named after he woman who made it possible for her to be here. Dawn is the one who truly saved their lives. Any gifts for them now would be a big help. Money, hay, feed, anything at all. Check out our 'Beer for my Horses' page. Her story is long and drawn out with lots of very gorey details. We gave you a brief overview. We are only going to think good positive though for this pair as they are fighting hard to recover. UPDATE1 We have discovered that our Delta Dawn is the granddaughter of famed Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew!!!!! Little Willie has some pretty impressive breeding too. Both are doing well and Dawn has gained a ton of weight. Her feet are starting to heal and grow back but it will be months before she is able to walk without boots. Willie is feeling good and running and kicking up his little baby heels. There was not permanent damage to his respiratory system. It has been about a month and they are both on the road to being happy , healthy horses. the DA has reopened the case and the vet may be charged with animal cruelty. This is not his first brush with the law. The first 2 weeks or so to keep this pair alive was about $800, any gifts to them now would be very much appreciated. UPDATE2 Dawn and Wille had a good Thanksgiving, with plenty to eat. Both horses are doing grand. We are not sure but suspect that Dawn may be bred. Can you imagine! Dawn has grown a beautiful black coat, and a fairly thick one too. Willie is enjoying playing in the early snow. The DA's office tells me that the vet, Ronald Peters will be charged and have to appear in front of a Grand jury sometime in the months ahead. Dawn's feet are still on the mend but we are hoping to get a set of barn shoes on her this month. Willie is learining to eat in his own stall out of his own bucket and is doing great. According to the owner that had Dawn before the vet, she is a nice riding horse but not for a beginner. We have come to see that she does have a bit of a stubbon streak. She does seem pretty laid back though and not much seems to spook her. They are in desperate need of assistance. Any gift would be great. Stratagy Feed by Purina is flowing like water at our barn so a bag of that would be great. Hay, all kinds is alway welcome. WE MAY START TO CONSIDER PLACING DAWN. A LOT IS DEPENDING ON HER FEET AND IF SHE IS BRED. UPDATE 3 Well here it is - the moment we have all been waiting for! Dawn and Willie will get there day in court on December 15th 2005. Ronald Peters will have to answer to the grand jurry! keep those hooves crossed!! UPDATE 4 Well we had it from the vet today that Dawn is expecting! The baby will be born in the spring. Dawn will be staying here at the rescue to foal out and will need more support than ever. Stay tuned for more mare and foal updates. UPDATE 5 Mother and son had a wonderful Holiday Season and recieved lots of cards from their friends and supporters. Dawn's belly is getting really fat with the new faol and Willie is growing up to be more like a big strong William. He has come into his rowdy age now at 7 months and has started some formal ground training on good manners and proper horsey behavior. Dawn's feet continue to be a problem for her and are progressing along slowly but surely. We are hoping after the new baby comes it will be easier to get her hooves back to 'normal'. The vet who owned both of them and allowed them fall into the state of illness they were in has been formally indited by the Washington Co. DA's office. UPDATE 6 Well Dawn and Willie are enjoying the mild winter weather. Willie has gotten to be a big boy and really wants to be in with the main herd but he isn't quite ready for that yet. Dawn is getting really huge with the foal and we can't wait to see what it looks like. We are all getting anxious about the impending birth. She is still holding her own with her feet but has a lot of healing still to do. Time keeps passing and bills keep mounting and she keeps chugging along. This past weeked Dawn had her teeth done by a wonderful equine dentist. ERIC WILLIAMSON 315-829-3135 He did a fab job! She had points like crazy and now has a beautiful set of choppers. Eric did 6 horse while at our barn and did not seditate a one of them. he is in the Utica area but travels to where he is needed. There has been a brief chat on Dawn bearing the American Flag at the Washington Co. Fair this summer. We will see where she is in her rehab and witht he new baby. Wouldn't it be great if her feet healed enough to allow her this honor! UPDATE 7 Well our little Willie now a 650lb 10 month old and doing great. He has recovered from being gelded and is as sweet as pie. His momma is really huge now with the new foal she is expecting and still fighting foot issues. We are going to try once again to get regular horse shoes on her this week so she can take off her heavy boots before mud season really sets in. She is going to need pads and lightweight bar shoes for support. This is going to be a costly endevor. If you would like to help with Dawn and Willie and the baby's bills donations of any kind are welcome. UPDATE8 Dawn is running like the wind in her new bar shoes and Willie has been intagrated into the main herd. We are still waiting for the new foal............. VICTORY On June 1,2006 after a 3 day trial, Dr. Ronald Peters was found guilty of animal cruelty. He will be sentenced on June 30th. This is a victory for horses everywhere that have suffered like Dawn and Willie. The ADA, Kathrine Henley did a wonderful job. NEW BABY Sadly we found out we will not be having a new foal this spring. Dawn and Willie are both fine and will continue to live here in the sanctuary. Dawn's feet will require more healing time until they are perfect and she can start to try to do anything, but she can run like the wind............... SENTENCING FOR THE VET The vet, Ron Peters, will be senctenced on July 11th at 11am at the Washington Co. court house in Ft. Edward. Open to the public. THE PUNISHMENT The dear old Doc has recieved 300hours of community service as well as 3 yrears of probation. The the powers that be are looking into his right to practice and will make the call. We will keep you posted. Dawn and Willie continue to thrive. Dawn's feet are really getting there. Her shoes are pretty pricey but we just keep on going. Thanks to all of you help with the cost of this live saving case. UPDATE 2007 Dawn is still doing ok. She has ups and downs with front left foot. Willie is now 2 years old! Imagine! He is a brute of a gelding standing taller then most of the horses but still as playfull as ever. END OF THE YEAR -07 Dawn is still fighting with her feet. X-rays shows that the coffin bone is rotated pretty far. She is sporting a new style shoe that seems to be helping her feel more comfortable. She has good days and bad days but still seems happy. Willie is standing over 16h at only 2 1/2 years old! He will start some light training soon. He has food agression when in a stall due to his starved start in life but out in the open he is just a big mush! HERE IS THE LATEST ON DR. RON PETERS It is with much sadness and anger that I write to all of you this afternoon. You all know of our wonderful horses Dawn and Willie who arrived here 2 years ago after being abused to near death by Doctor Peters. Peters license has been under review by the OPD ever since he was convicted of animal abuse in the Washington County Court system last year. It was the SECOND time this vet was convicted of a crime involving the mistreatment of animals. It was the second time he avoided jail time. Last winter Ms. G. (one of our volunteers who handles the follow-up work and keeps tabs of the legal matters) and I were asked to appear at the OPD in Albany to fill in the prosecutor, who was going after Peters license or so we were told, on some personal details of the case. He also viewed a tape of Dawn and Willie made within their first 24 hours here at the rescue and asked me to walk him through it. He assured us that the recommendation would be for Peters to lose his license by the end of this year. He had met the man personally and felt it was time for him to retire from hands on vetting. We believed him. We counted on him. We put faith in the system that justice would prevail. It has not.............. Today I received a letter. It reads as follows: "RE: in the matter of RONALD J PETERS As its October 22-23,2007 meeting, the New York State board of Regents accepted Dr. Peters' Application for Consent Order. The disciplinary action taken was a twenty-four month suspension of Dr. Peters' license to practice veterinary medicine in New York State with the last twenty-two months of said suspension stayed. Upon Dr. Peters' return to practice, he will be placed on two years probation and receive a monetary fine. The action taken by the Board of Regents terminates the disciplinary proceedings against Dr. Peters and takes effect November 5, 2007. " Of course the horses are safe now but due to Peters neglect Dawn will always have foot problems and some discomfort. Willie will always be food aggressive. We are sad to share with the world that Dawn has been laid to rest due to the condition of her feet. We were able to bring her back and keep her comfortable for a few years but alas, the neglect has come to a pont of no management. The decision was made with our vet and she will now never feel any more pain. Wilie is big strapping 3 yr old this spring. He has his first taste of Perilli training and did very well. He will no doubt make his momma proud.....
